L.B. Fred and I originally wrote this lyric with two verses, a bridge, and another verse. I kept telling Jimmy ("Nobody Loves Me Like You Do") Dunne that the song was too long by Nashville standards, but he kept telling me it was fine. Then one night, I get the call from California: "Jim, we've just finished the tracks, and the song is fantastic! However, we cut it with only two verses and a bridge. The singer is flying in tomorrow morning. Can you fix the lyric by then?"
Keep in mind that California is three hours behind Ohio - it was already very late at night here in Ohio. I tried to reach L.B., but couldn't get him on the phone.
I started working on it, went to bed, got up early the next morning and went to Bill's Donuts in Centerville (where I often worked on songs before going in to work), and finished a major revision on my own. I sent it to Jimmy as soon as I got into work, and the demo singer cut it that day.
If it sounds like Jimmy made it hard on me, I need to correct that. Jimmy had faith in me, and he taught me more about songwriting than I've learned from any other single source. That this song is so great is because he wouldn't accept anything less.
