I wrote the original draft of this song back in 1987. I have made some revisions to improve it, but most of it was there in the first draft.
It was inspired in part by Stephen King's Danse Macabre in which he made a distinction between terror, horror, and revulsion- terror being the "finest" of the three. My goal was to write a terror song - not campy, not silly, but truly scary. I wanted to capture those basic human fears, the "it" that still hides in our darkened closets, under the bed, or out in the shadows at night.
I waited until 2013 to get it produced, because I never found anyone whom I was confident could do it justice. I like to joke that I had to "raise" the producer for this song: Bryce was my son's lifelong friend and I am the one who introduced him to musical performance. He's brilliant!
I hope "At Night" keeps you up tonight!
