When Did I Stop Being a Kid
Jim Melko & L.B. Fred
Today was a bad one, my desk is a mess
Sometimes it’s just too much to bear
It’s time to go home, leave behind all the stress
On the way, I pass by the old playground where
It was swingsets and baseball and cowboys and guns
And life was a matter of homework or fun
No one’s future depended upon what I did
So when did I stop being a kid?
My wife’s on the sofa with tears in her eyes
She’s holding an old Raggedy-Ann
She said, “I’m cleaning the attic, and look what I found!
You may not understand…
But we would play through the day with our tea sets and clothes
And you’d be surprised at the secrets she knows
Oh, the princes we married and parties we’d give!
When did I stop being a kid?”
When did heroes start standing on feet made of clay
When did summers stop being a time just for play
When did Santa stop coming and the bills come instead
And when did I stop being a kid?
Tell me, when did I stop being a kid?
