Never Said A Word (About The War)
Jim Melko & Chuck Pinney
Verse 1
He wasn't there when I was born
I was two when he came home
He couldn't walk without a cane
His hip was shattered bone
But he was still my father
And though the pain was bad
He'd get down on the floor with me
To play and make me laugh
Chorus 1
But he never said a word about the war
If you’d ask, he'd smile and shake his head, nothing more
He would talk about my baseball games and all his plans for me
But he never said a word about the war
Verse 2
In his wallet were two pictures
Their edges scorched and burned
In one he’s with two soldiers
Who they were I never learned
In the other was my mother
As a young and pretty bride
Those were the only things that ever brought tears
To my daddy’s eyes
Chorus 2
But he never said a word about the war
If you’d ask, he'd smile and shake his head, nothing more
He would talk about his wife who stood beside him all those years
But he never said a word about the war
Bridge
A flag upon the coffin
Twenty-one guns in salute
The soldier finally laid to rest
But the father that I knew….
Chorus 3
Never said a word about the war
Ask, he'd smile and shake his head, nothing more
On his headstone are the words,
"There are some things worth fighting for"
But he never said a word about the war...
No, he never said a word about the war
