WITH EVERY STEP YOU TAKE
By Cassandra Joy Russel

I was just sixteen years old when I found out the news and thought
Oh, no. What am I gonna tell Joe?
All those plans we had set and we weren’t even married yet
But I couldn’t lie even though it killed me inside
I saw a dozen different emotions in his face
Said he needed time to think as he turned and walked away, I thought

Chorus:
With every step you take I feel my heart breaking in two
What can I do but watch you go my words stuck in my throat
Tears running down my face with every step you take

You were only one year old when you stood up on your own
Took your first step leaving me speechless
Joe pulled me into a hug, said our little boy is growing up
While I tried not to cry
Smiling as you picked yourself up after every fall
Such uncertainty. Don’t know where your life will lead

Chorus

You were only thirty-three when you took that road to Calvary
Pain with every step, and no one would help
You never even said a thing, just endured the soldiers’ beatings
While I looked on, begging them to stop
And when that twisted crown of thorns was pressed into your head
You still carried that cross, though it took everything you had

Chorus

Three days later just a blur, then someone said the tomb you were
Buried in was open
I ran out just to see if this was truth or trickery.
But what I saw made me fall to my knees

(Key Change)

With every step you take I feel my heart break.
Is this true? Yes, it’s really you!
You walk up slow; my words get stuck in my throat
Tears running down my face
With every step you take
